Irbid

Irbid

Overview

Introduction

This city, 57 mi/92 km north of Amman, is located near the Al Himmeh hot springs. These natural baths, still used today, are a bit smelly, but the beautiful views of Lake Tiberius (the Sea of Galilee) help compensate for any unpleasantness.

About 20 mi/30 km northwest of town is the Decapolis city of Umm Qais, once a Greco-Roman center of culture and the arts. The highlight of Umm Qais is a stroll through the old city's ruins, which, although not especially well-preserved, are atmospheric and include amphitheaters, mausoleums, baths and many columns.

Pella, another Decapolis city, also has a lot of antiquities from several different periods. The whole area makes an interesting day trip from Amman.
