Overview

Introduction

Famous for the Qalaat al Rabadh, a 12th-century fortress built by Muslim Arabs as a defense against the European Crusaders, Ajloun sits atop the tallest mountain in Jordan (4,068 ft/1,240 m). Located 30 mi/45 km northwest of Amman, it affords fabulous views of the area. Ajloun also has a 600-year-old mosque. Around the town and to the north is the picturesque Ajloun Forest Reserve, which is filled with olive orchards and stands of pine trees. The city is best seen as a day trip from Amman. Be aware, however, that the newer highway heading north from Amman to Irbid completely bypasses Ajloun. Visitors should take the older road, which allows a stopover there.
