Eridu

Eridu

Overview

Introduction

Locally, Eridu is claimed to be the oldest city in the world, dating back to 4000 BC (it was built upon a lake that's now gone). Of special interest are the temple (claimed to be the world's oldest religious structure) and the mud and straw huts.

Eridu is usually seen in conjunction with Ur, which is approximately 15 mi/20 km northeast. Nasiriyah can be used as a base to visit Eridu and Ur. Eridu is 115 mi/185 km west of Basra.
