St. Thaddeus

St. Thaddeus

Overview

Introduction

In northwestern Iran between Maku and Tabriz, St. Thaddeus was Christianity's first sanctuary. The monastery, said to be built by Jude (also called Thaddeus, brother of the Apostle James), was destroyed, but the building now on its site is impressive, with friezes, fortified walls and Romanesque art. If you're there in July, attend the Armenian ceremony commemorating the death of St. Thaddeus. 350 mi/565 km northwest of Tehran.
