Overview

Introduction

Iran's second-oldest city after Mashhad, Qom (pronounced GHOM) is a holy pilgrimage site for Shiites. Most of the country's top religious leaders, including Ayatollah Khomeini, studied theology there. Qom merits a day's visit to see the mosques, 14th-century towers and the golden dome of the Masoumeh Shrine. The city is also known for its pottery and textiles. 75 mi/120 km south of Tehran.
