Gotland Island

Gotland Island

Overview

Introduction

Surrounded by beaches and white cliffs 100 mi/160 km south of Stockholm, Gotland is Sweden's largest island. The weather is fairly mild, and its size—110 mi/170 km long and 30 mi/50 km wide—makes it a good place for beachcombing, watersports and relaxation. It's where many Swedes vacation.

Gotland's main attraction is Visby, the island's capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Attractions in this walled, Hanseatic city include museums and church ruins, and the spectacular Medieval Week that is held in August.

Nature lovers won't want to miss a trip to the stony shores of Faro, a northern island easily reached by car ferry.
