Dimmuborgir

Dimmuborgir

Overview

Introduction

Located 175 mi/280 km northeast of Reykjavik near Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir, Iceland, is a public park—a must-see for anyone who wants to explore the surrealistic landscape of a lava field. Well-marked trails make it very accessible (children love this park). A hydroelectric project under way is expected to impact the park.

Local folklore claims that Dimmuborgir is the place where the thirteen Icelandic Santas live most of the year, with their mother. Satan was also said to have landed there after being cast out of heaven.
