The largest island in the Ionian Sea, Cephalonia, Greece, offers excellent watersports and rugged coastal scenery. Take a small boat to visit the Melissani Grotto, stroll through the capital town of Argostoli, enjoy the view from the Venetian citadel at Assos, relax on one of the island's beautiful beaches (the best are Makris Gialos and Myrtos Bay) and enjoy the wine festival in the village of Frangata on the third Saturday in August, which celebrates the local Robola wine. Don't miss the northernmost port of Fiskardo, a picturesque village that retains its Venetian architecture.
Mount Enos has good hiking, free-roaming wild horses and tall fir trees found nowhere else in the world. Cephalonia is located 175 mi/280 km west of Athens, though it's generally reached by ferry from Kyllini or by plane from Athens.
