Koprivshtitsa

Koprivshtitsa

Overview

Introduction

Located in the Sredna Gora mountains about 70 mi/115 km east of Sofia, Koprivshtitsa is a symbol of Bulgarian national independence. This pretty village is preserved as an open-air museum in honor of the revolution that led to war between Turkey and Russia and, ultimately, Bulgarian independence.

Magnificent historic stone and wood houses of unusual Bulgarian National Revival architecture, with ornate detailing, line narrow cobblestoned streets. Six homes once occupied by the most famous revolutionaries are now museums and show visitors what luxurious living conditions were like more than a century ago. Note, however, that some buildings are closed on either Monday or Tuesday.

Koprivshtitsa is also renowned for its huge folk music festival, held every five years.

Below Koprivshtitsa is the scenic Topolnitza River; above it lie verdant hills. Plan at least a half-day in Koprivshtitsa en route from Sofia to Plovdiv.
