To reach this region, about a four-hour drive from Yerevan, you'll travel through the Ararat Valley, with its dramatic view of Mount Ararat, and into the mountains of eastern Armenia. There are several hotels and health spas in the area that have been brought somewhat into the modern age, making Jermuk's beauty accessible. The word Jermuk derives from the Armenian jerm, which means "warm". A large gorge offers walks past a cascading waterfall and wildflowers, and paths around a lake formed from natural springs lead to an open-air building with fountains of hot mineral water.
Continue southeast for about 35 mi/55 km and you'll reach Tatev Monastery, an impressive ninth-century structure perched high on a mountain. Also of interest is the neighboring stone village of Goris, where people once lived in homes carved out of large rocks. Jermuk is 65 mi/105 km southeast of Yerevan.
