Overview

Introduction

The village of Mont-Carmel lies in the heart of Prince Edward Island's Acadian culture, 56 mi/90 km west of Charlottetown. Be sure to see Our Lady of Mont-Carmel Church, which has rounded vaults reminiscent of European churches. Also worth checking out are the nearby Musee Acadien (depicting Acadian life since 1720) in Miscouche and hand-crafted wares at Le Co-op d'Artisanat Abram-Village. The village's restaurant serves authentic Acadian dishes. If you know some French and want to practice, go ahead—French is the primary language in this small corner. Nevertheless, don't worry if you don't know the language. The friendly folks in Mont-Carmel are bilingual and extend a warm welcome in both English and French. On Route 11 near Cap-Egmont, look for The Bottle Houses—a series of quirky buildings that an island artist constructed from recycled glass bottles.
