The small, attractive village of Ferryland, on the eastern shore of the Avalon Peninsula, is part of the so-called Irish Loop of Newfoundland and Labrador. The community 50 mi/80 km south of St. John's was originally settled by George Calvert, better known as Lord Baltimore, who established several of the island's early colonies before he moved south to establish another colony in Maryland.
An archaeological dig has been in progress for several years to unearth Lord Baltimore's home, which was enlarged into a castle by his successor, Sir David Kirke.
Historic Ferryland is across from the site in the old courthouse and houses a large exhibit of artifacts, as well as a gift shop with regional books, local crafts and Beothuk artwork.
The Southern Shore Shamrock Festival, a music festival, is held in Ferryland each July in a dramatic seaside location.
