Sabratha

Sabratha

Overview

Introduction

This ancient city was once ruled by Carthaginian and Numidian kings before falling under Greek and then Roman rule. Although not quite as impressive as Leptis Magna, it offers unique houses (some two-stories tall) with colorful mosaic floors and paintings from the seventh century BC. There is also an excellent Roman theater restored by Italian archaeologists in the 1920s. Be sure to visit the Roman Museum with its beautiful mosaics. Sabratha can be seen in about an hour.
