Touba

Touba

Overview

Introduction

In the heart of peanut-growing country, Touba, Senegal, is the spiritual center of the Islamic Mouride Brotherhood, which plays an important role in the religious life of millions of Senegalese.

Touba's Grand Mosque has minarets that are 260 ft/80 m tall, making it the highest mosque in sub-Saharan Africa and third-highest in the world. The five minarets are visible from miles/kilometers away and offer wonderful views of the town and countryside. (You'll probably want to avoid Touba during Magal, a religious pilgrimage that draws hordes of people to the mosque.)

An insignificant village prior to the completion of the mosque in 1964, Touba has since grown to be the second-largest city in Senegal, with a population estimated at more than a half-million people. Touba lies 110 mi/175 km east of Dakar.
