Overview

Introduction

Once called Mactaris, this town sits in the foothills of the Dorsale mountains south of Tunis and could be visited for scenery alone. Its museum has a good collection of Punic and Roman bronze and marble statues. You'll also find the remains of Numidian fortress walls and various ruined arches, baths, temples and mausoleums. If you have time, visit the Schola des Juvenes (youth center). The local market is held on Monday. Plan a one-night visit. 85 mi/140 km southwest of Tunis.
