Overview

Introduction

One of the Communist Party's former summer retreats, Terelj is now full of tourist camps. It's inside the Gorkhi Terelj National Park, which is in the Baga Khentii Mountains. The area has gentle mountains and scenic green valleys set at an average altitude of 5,200 ft/1,600 m. The wildflowers in summer are stunning. There are lots of possibilities for hiking, horseback riding and bird-watching. The adventurous can go by horse to Black Lake—a beautiful and challenging ride. Also nearby is Tortoise Rock, a reptile-shaped rock formation created by an ancient glacier—you can climb right inside. 55 mi/85 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar.
