On the Baengma River in the Honam region, 95 mi/150 km south of Seoul, Buyeo is home to the Buyeo National Museum. The town's main claim to fame is that it was the last capital of the Baekje kingdom. Area sights include the Unjin Miruk Buddha (75 ft/23 m high) at Gwanchoksa, King Muryeong's Tomb (glazed tiles) and Baekhwajeong Pavilion on the Nakhwaam cliff of Busosan. The pavilion commemorates the suicide of 3,000 court ladies of the Baekje kingdom in the year 660—they chose to jump into the river to avoid being captured by the invading armies.
Every other year in October, a large cultural festival commemorating Buyeo's history is held in the city.
