Nampo

Nampo

Overview

Introduction

A half-day trip can be made from Pyongyang to Nampo to see the West Sea Barrage, a 5-mi-/8-km-long seawall that controls tides and flooding in a wide estuary on the western coast. It's an impressive feat of engineering, and you'll hear an endless discourse on the details of its construction, down to how much concrete and steel are in it. You'll see a film documenting the difficulties workers faced and hear mythic tales of Kim Il Sung's inspirational involvement. This self-congratulatory video lasts about an hour, which is the lion's share of time spent at this place. It's worth visiting for a few photographs, but longer visits will be of interest only to students of engineering. Nampo is 34 mi/55 km southwest of Pyongyang.
