Flores Island

Flores Island

Overview

Introduction

No tour of Indonesia can be complete without a visit to what some call the most beautiful island in Indonesia. Flores, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, has thick jungle and both active and inactive volcanoes. The most spectacular of these is Kelimutu, distinguished by its "three-color" lakes at the top. The best time to see it is at dawn, before the clouds roll in. The lakes were once only accessible via a strenuous overnight hike, but today Jeeps whisk most visitors to the top.

Roads and modern communications have not reached many parts of the island, so its remote villages have developed distinct cultures and languages. Flores, although fascinating, is not for the timid or the fussy.
