Kargil

Kargil

Overview

Introduction

Mostly inhabited by Arab-speaking Shiites, Kargil, India, is the second-largest city in Ladakh, the eastern two-thirds of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. While there's not really much to see or do there, the bus from Srinagar to Leh stops in Kargil overnight. Travelers should be alert to the unrest and violence in the region. Kargil is 400 mi/645 km north of Delhi.

Kargil is also where you will spend the night if you're going onwards to the region of Zanskar, a rugged, beautiful and desolate area to the south.
