Extending north across the border with Canada, this 2,340-acre/950-hectare park is dedicated to the friendship between the two nations. Self-guided, scenic drives on both sides of the border loop around lakes, playgrounds and picnic areas. The 1.5-mi/2.5-km border walk through the Formal Gardens shows an enormous carpet of flowers blooming over the North Dakota-Canada border. To see the blooms at their brightest, visit mid-July through mid-August. Other sights include gardens, an arboretum and a tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. You can take in an assortment of concerts and performances in summer when the garden hosts its well-regarded music camps for Canadian and American youngsters.
The Four Chaplains Monument in nearby Bottineau is dedicated to four World War II chaplains who gave their life jackets to fellow passengers when the USAT Dorchester sank off the coast of Newfoundland. Also nearby is Lake Metigoshe State Park, which is a good spot for a slew of activities: boating, canoeing, picnicking, swimming, cabins, camping, ice skating, fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. International Peace Garden is 280 mi/451 km northwest of Fargo.
