Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

Overview

Introduction

This military park, which extends from Georgia into Tennessee, commemorates two major Civil War engagements that took place in 1863: the Battle of the Chickamauga and the Battle of Chattanooga. It includes Missionary Ridge, where Gen. Ulysses S. Grant led Union forces to a decisive victory over Confederate troops. On the Tennessee side, the preserve also encompasses Point Park on Lookout Mountain, Orchard Knob in downtown Chattanooga and Signal Point on Signal Mountain. An interpretive museum and visitors center offers an impressive multimedia show. The park also has tours, demonstrations, horseback riding and hiking. At nearby Fort Oglethorpe, which was built around the turn of the 20th century, the River of Death Battlerama interprets the Battle of Chickamauga. The military park is 105 mi/170 km northwest of Atlanta.
