The name of Stora Sjofallet National Park in Lapland means "big waterfall," because its huge waterfall was originally the main attraction of this park 580 mi/935 km north of Stockholm.
In the early 1900s, however, a hydroelectric power plant was built that gradually decreased the waterfall's flow. Today, you can see a limited water flow except on certain days in July (called Fallens dagar) when the power plant opens its gates to allow spectators to view the waterfall's flow as it once looked.
You can also see herds of wild reindeer in the park, and many hiking possibilities exist—but because of the snow, don't count on being able to hike until the middle of summer.
The town of Gallivare is a good base from which to visit this and other nearby parks, including Muddus National Park with its primeval forest of pine and birch trees, ancient bogs, steep ravines and gorgeous Muddusjokk waterfall. http://www.swedishepa.se.
