Kafue Natl Park

Kafue Natl Park

Overview

Introduction

Zambia's largest game reserve (at 8,685 sq mi/22,500 sq km, it's half the size of Switzerland) is not the country's best game reserve. Visit the park if it's your only chance to see a game reserve, but otherwise don't bother. The same animals can be seen in greater numbers at other parks. Residents of Kafue include a smattering of elephants, lions, hyenas, hippos and a variety of antelopes (you have to be lucky to see a sable or roan). Red lechwe (another antelope) are seen in the northern Busanga Plains section. Walking tours, lasting up to eight days in length, can be taken into the northern section of the park, but they're not nearly as exciting as similar tours in South Luangwa National Park. Kafue is a three- to four-hour drive from Lusaka in optimal conditions, or you can fly to Ngoma and go by car from there. 160 mi/260 km west of Lusaka.
