Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Overview

Introduction

In the bamboo forests just north of Bukavu, this park is one of the last refuges of the endangered mountain gorillas. The gorillas, which are the same species studied by Dian Fossey (who wrote the book Gorillas in the Mist), live high on Mount Kahuzi. When conditions are stable, there are organized trips to see the gorillas. (You can make reservations in Bukavu when the trips are available). Despite the region's unstable situation, park management has improved since the days when the guides would intimidate the gorillas with machetes. Because of the ongoing refugee situation, we don't recommend a visit to the city, which is on the shores of Lake Kivu. The park is about 15 mi/25 km north of Bukavu.
