Windwardside

Overview

Introduction

Windwardside is the island's biggest village, with curving, narrow streets and charming cottages. You'll probably learn the names of the shopkeepers and, if you get a walking-tour guide from the tourist office, discover hidden pathways to expansive views. Across the road from the tourist office is a 19th-century cottage (the former home of a sea captain) that contains the Saba Museum. The museum is worth visiting just to get an idea of how formidable the island was to settlers. (Look for the photo of pioneers in a tiny rowboat on an enormous ocean wave.) It also contains what's said to be the first Union Jack flag ever made. Don't miss the typical garden and gravesite out back—most Sabans bury their dead in their yards. Other attractions in town: the Church of St. Paul's Conversion and the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Both are more than 100 years old and constructed partly of hand-carved stones.
