Wailuku

Wailuku

Overview

Introduction

Wailuku is Maui's county seat and home to most government buildings, the island's only hospital, and most professional services, from lawyers to doctors. It is also rich historically, as one of three originally populated areas in Maui history under Hawaiian rule (Lahaina and Hana being the other two). Wailuku's proximity to Iao Valley makes it an excellent stop for a bite to eat, or perusing landmarks and pawn shops.

But with commercial enterprises prospering next door in Kahului, Wailuku's tough economic challenges show in dilapidated storefronts and empty buildings. A vigorous grassroots effort by local business owners has resulted in a street beautification program and a successful community event called First Fridays, with street entertainment and sidewalk sales once a month.
