Stockbridge

Overview

Introduction

Artist Norman Rockwell spent his last years in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. A sizable collection of his works, most notably cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post, are displayed at the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Another famous Stockbridge artist was Daniel Chester French. At his summer home, Chesterwood, French developed the first models of the impressive statue that is the centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The home, gallery and gardens are open during the summer.

Musician Arlo Guthrie is also identified with Stockbridge and still lives nearby: His comic folk anthem Alice's Restaurant was based on experiences in Stockbridge in the 1960s.
