Nestled in York County near the North Carolina-South Carolina border, 70 mi/110 km north of Columbia, Rock Hill blends a rich historical past with modern growth.
The Catawba Indian Nation, the only federally recognized Native American tribe in South Carolina, still thrives on about 600 acres/240 hectares near the Catawba River. Nearby Historic Brattonsville, a living history village and Revolutionary War battlefield site, features 29 historic structures and was used in filming the movie The Patriot.
The city has undergone a growth period with many businesses and restaurants opening in a shopping district on the edge of the city. Outdoor pursuits include Cherry Park, a 68-acre/30-hectare recreational facility designed for family use (look for the Casey at the Bat statue near the entrance). The man-made Lake Wylie is also nearby, offering more than 70 campsites, picnic areas and public access to boat ramps.
Just across the state border is Carowinds. The theme park straddles the North Carolina-South Carolina border and includes thrill rides, concerts and WaterWorks water park.
