Moorhead

Moorhead

Overview

Introduction

There's a small but active artists colony in Moorhead, which bumps up against Fargo, North Dakota, to create one metropolitan area. While in Moorhead, see the Red River Valley Heritage-Hjemkost Interpretive Center, home of the Hjemkomst, a full-size replica of a Viking ship. In 1982, a crew sailed the Hjemkomst to Bergen, Norway. Many of the state's residents are of Norwegian, German and Icelandic decent. The Heritage Hjemkomst Festival, a celebration of Scandinavian culture, is held every June.

The Rourke Gallery, Rourke Museum and comstock House are excellent museums in Moorhead.

Nearby are Buffalo River State Park and the Nature Conservancy Bluestem Prairie preserve, which showcase the largest tract of native prairie in the state. Bird-watchers flock to the area to see the prairie chickens. Moorhead is 150 mi/241 km from St. Cloud.
