Niagara-on-the-Lake

Overview

Introduction

About 15 mi/25 km north of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parkway reaches the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, located at the mouth of the river on Lake Ontario.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is steeped in history and was Canada's first capital until 1867, when Ottawa assumed that distinction. These days, tree-lined streets adorn this cluster of early Canadian homes, many of them with lavish gardens and white picket fences. British traditions remain strong: You'll find high tea served in the afternoon at such historic establishments as the Prince of Wales Hotel. Horse and buggy rides take you along Queen Street through quiet residential areas and past prestigious hotels near the waterfront.

This quaint town draws large crowds for its cultural activities such as the Shaw Festival. Its location at the mouth of the river makes it a popular destination for newlyweds as well as budding photographers.

Niagara-on-the-Lake has an extensive selection of bed-and-breakfasts and luxury inns.
