Lakehurst

Lakehurst

Overview

Introduction

Lakehurst's claim to fame is the fact that the German dirigible Hindenburg burst into flames in the air minutes before it was to land there in May 1937. The charred remains of the Hindenburg are housed in the Lakehurst Historical Society on Center Street, and Hangar 1 at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station is a National Historic Landmark. There's also a wonderful walking tour of the Victorian houses that line Church Street. Lakehurst is 50 mi/80 km south of Newark.
