Grand Coulee Dam

Grand Coulee Dam

Overview

Introduction

One of the largest concrete structures and greatest producers of electricity in the world, Grand Coulee Dam is an impressive sight. Late May-September, a nightly laser light show illuminates the massive spillway.

Drive to Dry Falls and look over the cliff where a 3-mi-/5-km-wide waterfall once plummeted some 400 ft/120 m. Far below are the Sun Lakes, which are popular with boaters and anglers.

Lake Roosevelt, which is formed by the dam, is a great place to rent a houseboat, complete with kitchen, sleeping area and barbecue grill. Visitors can swim, fish, explore or just relax in the sunshine on the lake. Much of the lake is part of the Coulee Dam National Recreation Area, which also encompasses lands for camping, picnicking and hunting.
