Calhoun

Overview

Introduction

Calhoun is 65 mi/105 km northwest of Atlanta. The New Echota State Historic Site commemorates the short-lived but valiant effort of the Cherokee Nation to form its own government in 1825, one that would exist side by side with the still-young U.S. for a time. The site includes restored buildings from the era.

Before their removal in 1838, the Cherokee developed the first written form of a Native American language. They published their own bilingual newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix. Reproductions of the paper can be seen at New Echota.
