Comino Island

Comino Island

Overview

Introduction

Popular with divers, Comino is a small and generally peaceful island midway between the islands of Malta and Gozo, about 13 mi/22 km northwest of Valletta. There's only one hotel on the island, and it's open April-October only. The ferry to reach the island departs (when the hotel is open) from Cirkewwa (Malta) and Mgarr (Gozo).

Comino is a good place to dive and relax. However, its idyllic Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular places in Malta and is packed with day-trippers and cruise boats in high season. It can be hard to find a patch on its lovely white sand, but the translucent turquoise waters are shallow and warm. There is little shade, so take a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Reaching the Blue Lagoon is relatively easy, as every tourist town in Malta has a variety of operators offering boat trips or other packages. Alternatively, just catch a ferry at Cirkewwa and reach the Blue Lagoon port in around 25 minutes.

Beyond the Blue Lagoon, be sure to visit Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay. If diving and lazing on the beach appeal to you, you could spend several days there.
