Conques

Conques

Overview

Introduction

The picturesque hillside village of Conques, France, lies on a medieval pilgrimage route in the southern part of the Massif Central, about 105 mi/170 km northeast of Toulouse.

In addition to lovely scenery, there is the Romanesque Abbey of Ste. Foy, which was founded by Benedictine monks.

It is famous for the 12th-century tympanum over the church's west portal: It depicts the Last Judgment, complete with 124 figures. The abbey's cloister houses a treasury with medieval gold religious objects.

Conques is also home to a research and resource center that studies the art and civilizations of medieval Europe.
