The town of Blowing Rock (10 mi/16 km east of Grandfather Mountain—one of the most scenic stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway runs between the two) is perched over a lowland valley and has nice views of the mountains stretching away to the southwest.
The town is charming and quaint, with upscale restaurants and shops, art galleries and antiques stores.
Blowing Rock also offers a variety of outdoor adventures, including hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and skiing.
The town takes its name from its main tourist attraction—the Blowing Rock, which catches strong winds rising from the valley. Drop something light such as a handkerchief over the edge, and it will supposedly blow back to you.
Blowing Rock's Art in the Park series is a popular event. The juried art show features more than 100 unique pieces from North Carolina craftspeople.
Outside of town is Tweetsie Railroad, an amusement park that centers on a train ride powered by a restored steam locomotive. Along the way, the train is ambushed by mock robbers.
