Tokat is a particularly Turkish town, 275 mi/440 km northeast of Ankara, easy to dismiss on first sight but worth an overnight stay and a poke down the back streets. Go there to bathe in the Alipasa Hamam, one of Turkey-s most famous bathhouses, admire the fantastic ceiling of the restored Ottoman Latifoglu Konagi, and stroll down Sulu Sokak, a street of crumbling Seljuk and Ottoman ruins left behind by the rerouting of the main thoroughfare.
Don't expect much of the accommodations, although tucking into a Tokat kebap is rated as one of Turkey's finer dining experiences.
