Marangu

Marangu

Overview

Introduction

Marangu is a busy little village 17 mi/27 km east of Moshi that most people visit to climb the Marangu Route up the mountain—the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park is 3 mi/5 km beyond the village. Marangu is also an excellent base for gentler walks, bird-watching and observing rural life in the foothills. Several trails radiate from the village into forest and through cultivated belts of coffee and bananas, and there are many waterfalls within a short walk—indeed, in the local Chagga language, Marangu means "a place with too many streams" in reference to the profusion of waterways running off Kilimanjaro. Marangu has a clutch of hotels to stay at or drop in for a meal or refreshments.
