Sion

Sion

Overview

Introduction

Sion, Switzerland, is a charming town in the Rhone Valley, 100 mi/160 km from Geneva. It is perched on a steep hillside with several medieval monuments set, citadel-style, atop craggy peaks. Castle Tourbillon and the Castle of Valeria, seen from afar on its twin peaks, make it immediately recognizable. Its Old Town, with its many monuments, is one of the oldest cities in Switzerland, with a history that dates back 7,000 years. One of its best-known sights is the Valere Basilica, which houses a 14th-century organ that is the oldest playable organ in the world.

Sion is situated in an important wine growing area and its wines are well-known throughout the world. The irrigation channels for the vines, carved in the hillside, also make good walking paths.
