Stellenbosch is home to Stellenbosch University, which is one of South Africa's top universities. Afrikaans is the language most commonly spoken by the locals, though many are also fluent in English, and the university is noteworthy for being one of the few higher education institutions that still conducts classes in Afrikaans. The Afrikaaner culture is quite conservative, which makes the character of Stellenbosch quite different from liberal Cape Town.
Guided tours of the city are available at the Tourism Office and leave the office at 11 am and 3 pm daily. For a self-guided tour, visitors can buy a copy of the "Stellenbosch on Foot" map and follow the simple instructions. Highlights include the four historical Cape Dutch houses at the Village Museum and "Oom Samie se Winkel," or Uncle Samie's Shop, the oldest general store in South Africa.
Stellenbosch also boasts a variety of small, private art galleries that feature local artists. Art lovers may also be interested in The Stellenbosch University Art Museum on Ryneveld Street or the Rupert Museum that houses a collection of South African and international art.
