About 225 mi/360 km from Mthatha lies Grahamstown, South Africa—also known as Festival City, City of Saints or Rhini. Home to Rhodes University and the annual National Arts Festival, Grahamstown is steeped in history. Even the main museum, the Albany Museum, dates back to 1855 and is the second-oldest museum in South Africa. Today it comprises seven separate museum buildings, the most fascinating of which is the Observatory Museum, where you can look through a genuine Victorian camera obscura.
Other places of interest are the 1820 Settlers Monument and the Makana Botanical Gardens bordering the university. Lying 25 mi/40 km south of Grahamstown is the quaint town of Bathurst with its trademark giant pineapple.
