Zhezkazgan

Zhezkazgan

Overview

Introduction

The industrial city of Zhezkazgan, 565 mi/910 km west of Almaty, Kazakhstan, has a few museums devoted to mineral extraction, but its primary appeal is its proximity to several old mausoleums of minor Kazak nobility. The town is also near Ulytau (meaning Great Mountains), which contains some of the most holy monuments of Kazak culture, such as the mausoleum of Alasha Khan, the mausoleum of Joshi Kahn and the Tokhamysh Ordas Khan mausoleum. Situated on the country's main north-south vegetation corridor, the area around Ulytau also features outstanding natural habitats of rare species including local botanical and zoological varieties and unique waterfowl such as pink flamingos and black storks.
