Moustiers-Ste-Marie

Moustiers-Ste-Marie

Overview

Introduction

The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Provence, in an exceptional setting, surrounded by the Gorges du Verdon, the Lac Sainte-Croix and the lavender fields of Valensole. The village is known for its faience (pottery), enjoying a rich history in ceramic craftsmanship since the Middle Ages. Enjoy walking through the narrow cobbled streets, although the streets can be crowded with tourists in the summer drawn by the quaint setting of the village and breathtaking surroundings.

Don't miss the 12th-century Notre Dame de Beauvoir chapel, which sits high in a notch above the village behind the ruins of the ancient village walls. Take the path above the parish church, with a three-story Romanesque belfry—the path is steep, but you will be rewarded with a view all the way across the valley to the Gorges du Verdon.

The village tourist office can be reached by phone at 4-9274-6784 or online. http://www.ville-moustiers-sainte-marie.fr.
