El Gouna

El Gouna

Overview

Introduction

Situated on interconnected islands on the coast of the Red Sea, El Gouna, Egypt, is a resort area that boasts exclusive hotels, sandy beaches and year-round sunshine.

The resort is a popular retirement area for Europeans and has caught on with vacationers looking for a sunny retreat.

One of Egypt's most popular destinations, El Gouna is only a couple of decades old. It sprang up along 6 mi/10 km of pristine beach by the Eastern Desert Mountains. Among its many draws are its seaside location, Mediterranean look, expansive facilities and its accessibility to Hurghada Airport, about 20 mi/32 km away.

Watersports of all kinds are available, including glass-bottomed boat tours, catamaran rides and canoeing. Chartered fishing and sailing excursions also are available, as is windsurfing.

There is an 18-hole El Gouna Golf Course designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples, as well as robust nightlife, a casino, discos and a selection of waterfront bars.

Visitors can explore the desert region in four-wheel-drive vehicles or take a camel ride. More conventional activities include horseback riding, bicycling and tennis. Children can play minigolf, take pony rides, ride go-karts, and visit the El Gouna Aquarium and Museum's fish and fowl farm to learn about local wildlife.
