A fairly small island, Anjouan (sometimes called Nzwani) is dominated by volcanic mountains covered with tropical foliage. Lying 80 mi/130 km southeast of Moroni, it has good beaches, excellent scuba diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing (those interested in water sports should spend at least four days there).
Mutsamudu, the principal town, is an old port with beautiful Arabic architecture. We like touring Anjouan's ancient citadel—its cannons once held off pirates and invaders. The local cemetery is filled with distinctive cone-shaped tombs.
Nearby Mount Ntingui, the highest peak on the island, provides a beautiful backdrop for many locations.
Outside town, we recommend a hike up to the Zialaharoussi Waterfall and a visit to the perfume distillery at Bambao (on the eastern coast).
Be sure to continue along the eastern coastal road, which is lined with great beaches. The drive passes sleepy villages and wonderful scenery, as well as the mausoleum of President Abdallah at Domoni, the old capital.
