Shenyang

Shenyang

Overview

Introduction

In Shenyang, China, you'll want to see the enormous statue of Mao and his fierce-looking comrades dominating central Zhongshan Square. Birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, many of Shenyang's historical attractions date back to this important Chinese era.

Be sure to visit Liaoning Provincial Museum, considered to be one of northeast China's largest museums. It is home to some 3,000 historical Chinese treasures. The museum's biggest attractions are the skeletons of two mammoth dinosaurs that are displayed on the building's first floor. Other artifacts include classical Chinese painting, pottery, porcelain, copperware and embroidery, many of which date back to ancient times. Some of the museum's most prized possessions include small, polished bones that are etched with inscriptions—some of China's earliest forms of writing.

Beiling Park is where you'll find the well-preserved tombs of emperors Nurhaci and Abahai, which pay tribute to the Manchu victory over the Ming. Koreatown is a boisterous place thick with karaoke bars.
