Kyustendil

Kyustendil

Overview

Introduction

Located 63 mi/102 km southwest of Sofia, near the border of Macedonia, the ancient Roman town of Kyustendil is situated amid beautiful wooded mountains. Kyustendil contains the Regional Historical Museum, the Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora Art Gallery, the ancient stone Hisarlaka Fortress, a historic Byzantine church, mineral springs, a town museum, and ruins of a Roman bath and settlement. There's also a small zoo.

Hikers can spend a day climbing nearby Mount Ruen (7,390 ft/2,250 m). Plan two nights if you're going for the spa or during the summer; otherwise, one day is enough.
