Burgas

Burgas

Overview

Introduction

Bulgaria's fourth-largest city, the coastal city of Burgas was once a Roman fishing village. Today, it is Bulgaria's major port and industrial center. It is also the location of a sizable marina where both yachts and small boats can dock. Burgas International Airport is the second largest in Bulgaria.

Located about 245 mi/395 km by road east of Sofia, Burgas is home to two universities and four colleges, so it has a large student population. However, Burgas is most notable as the starting point for excursions to Nessebar or Sozopol; Sunny Beach or Elenite; or the town of Pomorie (health spa with mud baths). Although a night's stay can be worthwhile, Burgas can also be visited on a day trip from one of the nearby resorts.
