Watson Lake

Watson Lake

Overview

Introduction

Travelers on the Alaska Highway usually stop at this community 280 mi/450 km east of Whitehorse along the border with British Columbia. Be sure to visit the forest of signposts indicating the direction and distance to cities throughout the world—you get the feeling of being at the most important point on Earth (or the place where visitors become most homesick).

If the sky is cloudy or it's not the right time of year to see the aurora borealis, you can still catch a re-creation of this natural wonder at the Northern Lights Centre. The light show there explains the science behind the phenomenon.

Even if you're not staying the night, take a break from the long drive (you'll need it) and stop at the Watson Lake Yukon Visitor Information Centre, which has exhibits documenting the construction of the Alaska Highway.
